"Open Secret" Original
The artist Hillary Kempenich responds to the behaviors of our society in which we have abandoned protecting the environment on and off tribal land. From a child, the artist recalls the detrimental effects on small communities caused by fossil fuels. In this particular piece, the artist had noticed an overwhelming amount of public notices regarding development of oil in North Dakota. In the same newspaper, there were various stories about contamination of the land.
The progress of this work came to a halt, when the artist was unsure where to go. During travels in 2015, the artist witnessed the Gold King Mine Spill, and its affects in Southwest Indian Country. As the damaging effects from oil continues on not only in North Dakota, but throughout Turtle Island.
Open Secret is a response in hopes that discussion and action are created to prevent such catastrophies.
